Town of Golconda
Golconda is located about 13 miles east of Winnemucca on Highway 80. The community is on the southern banks of the Humboldt River. The Town's slogan promised "What Anaconda has been for Montana, Golconda promises to be for Nevada." Today, Golconda is a rural alternative to city life in Winnemucca and provides a shortened commute for employees working in the mines of northern Humboldt County. This area is considered Cowboy Country and houses the Buckaroo Hall of Fame at the Convention Center, as well as playing host to a large variety of rodeo and roping events throughout the year. The area has some of the most productive gold mines in the United States. In addition agriculture, construction, and tourism are also a major part of its economy.

Humboldt County is located in the rugged, high desert region of north-central Nevada, bordered on the north by Oregon and by neighboring Nevada counties to the west, south and east. Humboldt County gets its name from the Humboldt River, which enters its borders near the southeastern corner, runs to the northwest for a distance of some sixty miles then continues to the Humboldt Sink, or Lake. Between the mountain ranges lie broad valleys and plains, most of them of desert nature, but which are now being rapidly settled and irrigated from small mountain streams. Humboldt County has a variety of valley and mountain lands, suitable for agriculture, grazing, stock raising and mining. The Humboldt River and its tributaries form the principal water supply for the irrigation of lands, though small mountain streams furnish the supply for some quite extensive individual ranches in the various parallel valleys.

Recreation
Winnemucca boosts five major casinos with exciting 24-hour gaming action, including slots, table games, live keno and sports books. It also offers numerous types of outdoor recreational activities including, hiking, hunting and biking trails, as well as miles of ATV and off-road adventure trails. The Black Rock is a playground of sorts for a variety of recreational pursuits, such as backpacking, car camping, mountain biking, backcountry horseback riding, hang gliding, hot springs bathing, off-highway vehicle use, ballooning, wildlife watching and photography. In 1997, the 20,000-pound British SSC Thrust jet used the desert expanse to set a new world land-speed record of 763 miles per hour.

Sportman's Paradise
Good hunting abounds throughout Humboldt County.Deer, Chukar, Sagehen, Duck, Geese, Quail, Dove, Pheasant and Antelope are all plentiful. Numerous fishing grounds are stocked with trout, catfish, crappie and walleye. Parks in Humboldt County include: Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Natural Area, Santa Rosa State Game Refuge.
