This lovely $10 U.S. note is perhaps better known as "The Jackass Note". On the front of the bill, at the center of the bottom there is an eagle with wings spread (Picture #3). If you turn the note upside down, it looks JUST like the head of a jackass (Picture #4). It took me a moment to see it -- the white of the eagle's head is the jackass's muzzle, his ears made of the eagle's talons and the shield it's standing upon. Neat!
"Jackass" aside, this note feature a portrait of Webster on the left hand side and a vignette featuring Pochohantas and John Smith on the right. The front is beautifully designed, with the words "United States" flowing diagonally across the center of the note in an "S" shape. The back is simple and elegant -- deep green with lots of BEAUTIFULLY engraved fancy 'filagree' workings.
Like any circulated note, this $10 has some minor folds in it. The two most obvious folds are vertical, one across the center and then two others on either side, where the bill was folded in quarters by someone 128 years ago. The front left side of the note has some yellowing of the paper, as does the back at the very top. Despite the character it earned in circulation, this lovely note still earned a certification of 15 FINE by the currency Grading and Authentication company.
Scarce in this condition, this note is often sought after and hard to find. This beautiful note would do any collector poud!
